Manifesta, Genk

Posted on August 20, 2012

Spent a Saturday in Genk, a Belgian city in the “EU Region” bordering Germany and the Netherlands. Genk is hosting the itinerant art project Manifesta and located the entire exhibit in a very interesting former coal mine complex. I really enjoyed the peeling, delapidated grandeur of the spaces and the contemporary comissions that responded to them. Some of the historical aspects were a little hard work, bordering on contrived, but this was another, gentler perspective on politics in art and art in society to add to my growing collection this year. If I had to pick some favourites, it would be Jota Izquierdo, Ben Cain and Tomas Furlan.
