Kunstenfestivaldesarts, Brussels

I did it! I bought the pass and attended all but a handful of presentations in the extraordinary Kunstenfestival- and I survived! I had a momentary wobble mid-way through the three week marathon of sometimes three shows a day, and had to skip Kris Verdonck’s new show at Kaaitheater, but by all accounts this was not his best work. Personal highlights were Antoine Defoort and Halory Goerger’s Germinal, She She Pop’s Shuhbladen and Joris Lacoste’s Enclycopaedie de la Parole. I was boggled by the huge range of work on show, from Mario Pensotti’s rather straight, if quirky, drama Cineastas, to Cheltfisch’s really unknowable and bewildering Ground and Floor. Of the thirty productions on offer, seventeen were world premieres, which is quite astonishing for a festival of this profile. And most of the time the halls were filled at least half full with festival directors from across the world. With a 98% sold ticket count, this is a staggering festival and I feel very privileged to have lived it in full colour twice now.
