Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland

Very happy on my Brisbane trip to finally make it to QAGOMA, the gallery of modern art on the revitalised Southbank precinct that I have been following from afar due to the bold and exciting curatorial vision that links very closely to the region. I was very impressed by the building itself, full of light and facing the river, surrounded by provocative public art and very open to the public. The exhibition I spent the most time in was the survey of current contemporary indigenous art, My Country, I Still Call Australia Home, that featured all the big names in indigenous practice and was loaded with powerful and sometimes shocking messages about the state of black society in Australia today. I also enjoyed Gordon Hookey’s cheeky and dynamic space for families, Kangaroo Crew, and only wish I had had my boys in tow to share this with.
