I finally made it to MONA. This private art museum in Hobart, Tasmania is as special as everyone says. I took the first ferry out there on a Saturday morning and the last ferry back and enjoyed every minute spent in the gallery and grounds. It helps to be able to drink a glass of wine and watch a live band in between floors one and two of the extensive collection, and to sit over a water view with lunch between levels two and three. Some of the advertising is pretty tacky and the multimedia explanations are not always helpful but there is an energy and a spirit to the place, and enough extraordinary new work to peruse, that make even the silliest marketing spiel forgiveable. I saw The Red Queen and hope to return for MONA FOMA or Dark Mofo, the music festivals, or to see a future exhibition.
