Fondation Lambert, Avignon

Very pleased to have found time in my Avignon Festival schedule to visit the St Anne Prison where the private foundation Lambert, had installed an enormous exhibit entitled The Dissapearance of the Fireflies. The space itself was pretty exciting, in that it has only just been repurposed after serving as a prison for many periods of Avignon’s history, including as a centre for the internment of Jews en route to the death camps during the Vichy administration. The art works were diverse, some more successful in the peculiar setting than others. Douglas Gordon featured prominently as did Louise Bourgeois, Anselm Kieffer, Warhol and other enormous names. I would have liked to have spent a lot longer with the video works in particular, but was glad to have had an opportunity to see this extraordinary space and its temporary transformation.
